Javascript Coding Challenge #1:
A Useful Ajax Application

Monday October 23, 2006
Javascript can dynamically update the content of the current web page with information retrieved from the server by using AJAX.

Ajax is the latest thing in Javascript programming and just about everyone who has a web site is currently incorporating Ajax processing into the site to produce all sorts of effects many of which would be better achieved in other ways. My challenge to the Javascript/Ajax programmers out there is to produce a concise Ajax script that actually performs a useful task. After everyone has submitted their entries I will post a Poll so that we can all vote for the best one. No prizes for the winner apart from a trophy graphic that will be displayed on this site on the page where I display the winning script.

The Rules

  • The script must use Javascript to perform an Ajax style call to the server to retrieve data to update the current web page.
  • The total of all Javascript and other client side files added to the page to perform the Ajax tasks must not exceed 10k in total size.
  • The server side processing can be done using whatever programming language you prefer.
  • You need to include a link to a page that contains a working version of the script.
  • You agree to a viewable copy of both the Javascript and server side script being placed on this site.
  • Any use of third party script libraries must comply with the licencing agreements applicable to those libraries.

Fill in this form to submit your script. Submissions are due by midnight on November 22nd, 2006. Voting will begin within a week.
